KIOWA, Okla. — The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday afternoon in Kiowa, authorities confirmed.
According to officials, the Kiowa Police Department requested OSBI assistance on January 30, 2026, following a shooting that stemmed from a traffic stop along State Highway 69. The incident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. when a Kiowa police officer stopped a vehicle for speeding.
Investigators said the driver, identified as 35-year-old Brandon Potts, failed to comply with verbal commands when officers attempted to make contact. During the encounter, Potts reportedly produced two knives, prompting the officer-involved shooting.
Emergency medical aid was immediately provided at the scene, and Potts was transported to a nearby hospital. He later died from his injuries. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
The investigation remains active. Once completed, OSBI officials will submit their findings to the Pittsburg County District Attorney’s Office for review to determine whether the use of force was legally justified.
OSBI expressed appreciation for the assistance provided by the Kiowa Police Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and the Savanna Police Department as the investigation continues. Further details are expected to be released once the inquiry is finalized.
