CARTHAGE, IL — The Carthage community is reflecting with gratitude and sorrow on the life of Erma Eileen Swank, who passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, January 25, 2026, at Hickory Grove Assisted Living. She was 90 years old. Erma’s passing marks the close of a life shaped by devotion, humility, and a deep commitment to family, faith, and public service.
Born on May 4, 1935, on her family’s farm near Carthage, Erma was the daughter of Henrich “Henry” and Mary Alice (Smith) Wachtendorf. Raised with strong rural values, she developed a quiet resilience and work ethic that stayed with her throughout her life. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1953 and carried the lessons of responsibility and service into every chapter that followed.
On May 4, 1958, Erma married Francis Wayne Swank at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage, beginning a partnership grounded in shared faith and perseverance. As a devoted farm wife, she worked alongside Wayne while remaining deeply involved in church life. She generously gave her time as a children’s Sunday school teacher, carefully tended altar candles, and found fellowship in women’s Bible study and the Widow Women Group—roles that reflected her steady faith and love for others.
Erma’s professional life was equally marked by dedication. After working at Sherrick’s Drug Store, she began a long career with the Hancock County Courthouse, serving in the County Clerk’s Office for 31 years. Known for her dependability and integrity, she retired in 2009, leaving behind a respected legacy of public service.
In retirement, Erma completed a cemetery pond project she and her husband had envisioned together, a quiet but lasting contribution to the community they loved. She also cherished time outdoors and found comfort in the companionship of her beloved cats, who were a source of joy in her later years.
Erma is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sally Swank; granddaughter Heather (Brandon McMullen) Swank; her sister, Evelyn Briley; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, her son Gary, her sister Mary Patrick, and her brother Richard Wachtendorf.
Remembered for her gentle presence, unwavering faith, and selfless service, Erma Eileen Swank leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength and grace. Her life continues to be a blessing to the Carthage community and to all who were touched by her kindness.
